How to Thrift: Hanneke’s Best Thrifting Tips

The ultimate treasure hunt? Thrifting, for sure! The thrill of finding that one piece that feels like it was made just for you (but existed long before you even thought about it) is hard to beat. Thrifting is sustainable, budget-friendly and let’s be honest - also just kind of a vibe, right? But how do you actually thrift like a pro? Fear not, fellow adventurer. We’ve teamed up with Hanneke van Zessen, stylist and thrifting queen extraordinaire, to bring you her top tips. Ready to dive into the wonderful world of pre-loved fashion? Let’s go!

1. Start small

“One of the most common reasons why people are hesitant to start thrifting is that it can feel overwhelming. And honestly, I get it. Endless racks of random items, a mishmash of styles, and yes, the occasional mystery stain or smell.

Not quite your scene (yet)? Start small! Dip your toes into vintage or preloved boutiques first. These shops have already done the hard work: items are handpicked, cleaned, and often beautifully displayed. While they might be a bit pricier than your average thrift shop, they’re still way more affordable than buying new - and infinitely more unique. You’ll probably leave feeling like a bona fide fashion icon!”

2. Make it a marathon

“Thrifting is not a sprint; it’s a leisurely stroll through a jungle of potential. Unlike regular stores (or the dark vortex of online shopping), you won’t find racks of the same item in every size. That perfect vintage denim jacket? There’s just one. So carve out at least an hour. Grab a coffee, play your favorite music through your headphones, and embrace the hunt. The payoff? Totally worth it.”

3. Define your style

“Don’t let trends or influencers boss you around. YOU decide what you like. But how do you actually know what you like? Start observing! When you spot someone with an outfit you love, ask yourself: What exactly do I like? Is it the tailored blazer? The funky sneakers? The bold colors? Take notes. (Yes, really.)

If people-watching isn’t your thing, Pinterest is a great alternative. Spend an evening exploring ideas by searching “outfits 2025” (or whatever year it is as you’re reading this). You can also dive into vintage vibes by looking up 60’s styles - or go bold with 80’s outfits - and save the looks that truly inspire you. Before you know it, you’ll have a clear sense of your style and a game plan for your next thrifting session.”

4. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize

“Accessories are the unsung heroes of the thrifting world. Hats, scarves, belts, and necklaces can transform any outfit from “meh” to “woah!” Plus, they’re usually super affordable and endlessly fun to mix and match. My advice would be to build a collection of quirky, statement accessories that make you smile. It’s the easiest way to level up your look without breaking the bank. Off you go, young padawan!”

5. Embrace the work out

“Online shopping has kind of ruined the joy of trying things on, hasn’t it? Confession: we’ve all ordered the same item in two sizes at one point, haven’t we? Thrifting brings back the magic of fitting rooms. Oversized or fitted? High-waisted or low-rise? You won’t know until you try. Plus, it’s a chance to experiment and break free from old rules. Thought you couldn’t rock a certain style? Think again. Bring a friend, make it fun, and don’t be afraid to get creative.”

By following these tips, you'll shop smarter, save money, and contribute to a more sustainable future - all while enjoying the thrill of the hunt. Need more inspiration? Check out Rianne’s or Eline’s top thrifting advice right here. Happy thrifting!

Florine started out as an art critic, but that turned out to not be quite her thing. So, she did what any sensible person would do - packed her life (and family) into a tiny campervan and roamed the planet for seven years. Now back in the Netherlands, she’s juggling life as a strategic advisor for a Dutch non-profit, while also writing for magazines and platforms. When she’s not typing away, you’ll probably find her treasure-hunting at thrift stores to jazz up her tiny house by the sea. Or wandering outdoors, because apparently sitting still isn’t really her vibe.
