The ultimate step-by-step guide to buying your first EV

Buying your first electric car can feel like learning an entirely new language. Suddenly, perfectly normal people are discussing kilowatt-hours, charging curves and battery preconditioning over coffee. The good news is that you do not need to become a part-time electrical engineer. You only need to understand which numbers matter for your life, where you will charge and what the car will really cost.

If concerns about range, battery life or charging are still making the switch feel rather risky, our guide to the 7 most common myths separates the genuine limitations from the stories that have simply travelled faster than the cars.

This guide focuses on fully electric cars rather than plug-in hybrids or second-hand EVs. Follow the steps in order and the enormous collection of models, battery sizes and charging speeds should begin to look considerably less enormous.

Step 1: Start with your life, not the car

Before opening a configurator and losing an evening to wheel designs, look at how you actually use a car.

Write down:

  • Your normal daily and weekly mileage
  • Your longest regular journey
  • How many passengers you usually carry
  • How much luggage space you need
  • Whether you tow a trailer or caravan
  • Where the car spends most of its time
  • How long you expect to keep it

Turn your answers into a list of non-negotiables. How many seats do you need? What must fit in the boot? Does the car need to tow? What is the longest regular journey it should complete comfortably? Keep this list beside you when comparing models, it will be way more useful than choosing the car with the longest range or largest battery by default.

Focus mainly on the journeys you make regularly. A holiday drive across Europe matters, but the car should first work well for your commute, shopping and other everyday trips. For those once-a-year trips, you can always rent a different car.

The financial advantage depends heavily on where you charge, how far you drive and the rules in your country.

Step 2: Work out where you will charge

Charging is not something to figure out after the car arrives. If you have private parking, ask whether a wallbox can be installed, how much it will cost and whether your electricity tariff offers cheaper charging at particular times. You may not need to charge every day. Compare your weekly mileage with the car’s realistic range to estimate how often you will need to plug in.

If you do not have a driveway, look for public, workplace, shopping mall and shared residential chargers around places where your car already spends time. The public network is expanding rapidly, as shown in the International Energy Agency’s latest charging analysis, but local availability and prices still vary considerably. Step 3: Set a budget for the whole car

New EVs are still generally more expensive to buy than comparable petrol cars. The International Energy Agency found that less than 10% of battery-electric models available in Europe in 2025 had a base price below $30.000, compared with around 25% of combustion-engine models.

The sticker price is only the beginning. Compare the total cost of finance or leasing, depreciation, insurance, taxes, charging, wallbox installation and maintenance, then subtract any available purchase grants or tax benefits.

Electric cars can cost less to run because electricity is usually be cheaper than fuel and electric motors require less routine maintenance. The financial advantage depends heavily on where you charge, how far you drive and the rules in your country.

Home charging has consistently offered running-cost savings compared to petrol cars, according to the International Energy Agency. Public charging can change that calculation: the IEA found that slow public charging may cost up to 150% more than residential electricity, while rapid charging can cost up to 240% (!) more.

Check local incentives close to the moment of purchase. Grants, tax benefits and registration rules change regularly, and yesterday’s attractive calculation may have quietly expired overnight.

Step 4: Learn the four numbers that matter

EV specifications contain enough figures to furnish a small spreadsheet. For a first comparison, focus on four.

1. Usable battery capacity

Battery capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours, or kWh. Think of it as the size of the energy tank. Look for usable capacity rather than total capacity. Manufacturers often reserve a small part of the battery to protect it, so not every stored kilowatt-hour is available for driving.

2. Realistic range

The official WLTP range – the official laboratory-measured driving distance an electric or fuel-driven vehicle can travel on a single charge or tank for comparing cars under the same conditions – is a useful starting point. It is not a promise of how far the car will travel in every situation. Motorway speeds, cold weather, wind, terrain and climate control can all reduce the range you achieve.

3. AC charging speed

AC is the slower type of charging commonly used at home, at work and at regular public charging points. The car’s onboard charger determines how much power it can accept. An EV capable of 11 kW AC charging can charge faster at an 11 or 22 kW public charger than a car limited to 7.4 kW. However, even at a 22 kW charger, its own limit remains 11 kW. This matters particularly if slower chargers will be your main energy source.

4. DC charging speed

DC rapid charging is mainly used during long journeys or when you need energy quickly. Do not look only at the advertised peak charging speed. Also check the typical time required to charge from 10 to 80%. A high peak that lasts only briefly may be less useful than a lower speed the car can maintain for longer. Step 5: Build a shortlist around your difficult journeys

Start with two or three cars that meet your budget, space and charging requirements. Then test them against the journeys most likely to expose their weaknesses. Can the car complete your longest regular drive in winter? Does it charge quickly enough during a normal motorway break? Can it carry the people, pushchairs, dogs, bicycles or wildly excessive holiday luggage involved in your life?

Features such as a heat pump and battery preconditioning may be especially useful in colder climates. A heat pump can reduce the energy required to warm the cabin, while preconditioning prepares the battery for faster charging. Useful technology, yes. A reason to buy a car that otherwise does not fit your life, no.

Step 6: Ask the boring questions

Battery failure is far less common than many buyers fear, but the warranty still matters.

Ask:

  • How long does the vehicle warranty last?
  • Does the battery have a separate warranty?
  • Is there a minimum capacity guarantee?
  • What servicing is required to keep the warranty valid?
  • How extensive is the local repair network?
  • How long will the manufacturer provide software and navigation updates?
  • Are connected services free or subscription-based?

Many manufacturers offer battery warranties of around eight years or 160.000 kilometres (100,000 miles), according to the US Department of Energy. Battery warranties often run longer than the general vehicle warranty and may guarantee that capacity remains above a particular percentage. Read the actual terms rather than relying on ‘eight-year battery warranty’ printed in large, comforting letters. Safety deserves the same attention as with any other car. Check the model’s independent Euro NCAP rating. EVs undergo the same main safety tests as other cars, with additional checks involving the high-voltage battery.

Step 7: Take a useful test drive

A ten-minute loop around the dealership tells you that the car moves forwards, which was hopefully never in serious doubt. Ask to drive on roads similar to those you use: through town, on faster roads and, if relevant, on a motorway. Try the different regenerative-braking settings, which determine how strongly the car slows when you lift off the accelerator.

Also test the ordinary things:

  • Can everyone sit comfortably?
  • Is the boot practical rather than merely large on paper?
  • Can you see and reach the main controls?
  • Are essential functions hidden inside the touchscreen?
  • Is the ride comfortable?
  • Is the turning circle manageable?
  • Is the charging port in a practical position?
  • Does the navigation system plan charging stops clearly?

If possible, ask for a longer test drive or borrow the car overnight. Living with the car for a day reveals more than circling an industrial estate beside a salesperson making polite conversation.

Step 8: Compare the complete offer

Once you have chosen a model, compare like with like. The cheapest advertised version may have a smaller battery, slower charging or fewer features than the car you tested. Check the exact trim, battery, charging specifications and delivery time. Also, check exactly what the price includes, such as charging cables, servicing, connected services and registration or delivery fees. Some offers may also include a wallbox discount, public-charging credit or heat-pump package.

Get an insurance quote before signing. Also check whether finance offers, manufacturer discounts or government incentives affect the total price and what happens if delivery takes so long that an incentive changes before the car arrives.
